The PLEASURE of shaving (2)

The "lather-up" phase: the different kind of products

I need to start with a little « mea culpa ». Yes, Yes, I know your was waiting for this blog post since weeks now. People were writing me to ask me when will do I think I will issue my next blog post. Someone, met in the street, asked me the same question. As a matter of fact, I was blocked in reports to produce, in figures to pile up…

It is now time to go back to the pleasure of shaving.

In the quest of the perfect shave (see my last blog post), the second phase is the lathering up. A quite obvious phase apparently. But, this is untrue. It is maybe the most difficult phase; a critical phase in which you have to make the right choice in terms of product. In The Art of Shaving, the somewhat famous (for the amateurs of wet shaving) of Myriam Zaoui and Eric Malka,  a lot of good advise are given for choosing the right products.

Let me summarize here the categories of product you can choose:

  • The Lather-Up Shaving cream:” By far  the best and most effective product for the wet shave. It generate the richest possible lather” according to Myriam Zaoui and Erik Malka
  • The Non Lathering Shaving Cream: For a rapid an efficient shave. My advise, forget them
  • Shaving gel: A modern product, rapid to use. Good for the business traveler but that’s all. Quite polluting product also.
  • Shaving foam: Less modern that gels, rapid to use. The less environmental friendly product. To avoid. Maybe for the business executive.
  • Shaving soap: an entire category of product you need to rediscover. There are different kinds of shaving soaps. As lather up shaving creams, shaving soaps are among the best products available.
  • Shaving oil: used as pre-shave, shaving oils possess wonderful capabilities. They are so efficient that they might be used for shaving, without usage of soaps and creams. For the adventurous traveler (biking, hiking, mountaineering)
  • To end up that list, I need to mention the “depilatory cream and powders”. Use them at your own peril.

I will not discuss all these products here. But you already understand that the choice is difficult. I will start with the products you should avoid when possible: gels and foams. Yes, I hear you from here, “putting aside my gels and foams? You are crazy? ». But wait a little....

I will you explain why you should avoid gels and foams in my next blog post.

Meanwhile, enjoy “The pleasure of Shaving” and Keep on shavin’
